The Ndebele are among the most minor tribes in Southern Africa but are easily the most colorful and distinctive. The styles of aprons on these dolls signify different important stages of the girl’s life. The style of the apron on this doll signifies that the girl has undergone the puberty rites and is now of marriageable age. A beaded black hoop around the waist indicates that the girl is engaged and married. The colorful traditional dress signifies that she has borne a child within wedlock and symbolizes her status as a parent.
